Lost in the snow

Rick likes being incognito.  If you want to find our house number, you need a shovel!

Mystery reader from Down Under

The kids loved Down by the Cool of the Pool the best.  Which just goes to show, because Dada thought it would be "too young" for them.

Bye bye Nana and Papa!

Nana and Papa had to dress warmly just to get in the car to brave the slippery roads home!

And Nana sewed Katy's ballet elastics on for her new pair of shoes too!

Thanks Nana!

A quiet day with Nana and Papa

Katy was thrilled when Nana and Papa agreed to stay an extra day with us!  The roads were still pretty slippery and Nana and Papa were still pretty tired from their huge drive back to Minnesota from Memphis, so it worked out pretty well all around.

After Mass, we visited the Arboretum to see the fairy displays, which were a little disappointing after the magnificent Tonkadale ones.
Katy was very tired and needed a little snack so tried an apple dumpling for the first time...she reminded us of when she was a baby and would open her mouth wide and say "ah, ah, ah" like a baby walrus wanting to be fed.
Once home, we tried to get Katy to do some homework...which seemed to require the help of Nana, Papa, Dada AND Mama!  First grade maths is really hard and it's even harder when you have to capture the fidgety, escaping first grader to get the homework done!

A visit from Nana and Papa

The recital was so exhausting for Dada and Papa!

Actually, we were very grateful to have Nana and Papa at the recital.  They drove all day yesterday and today to get here from Memphis with winter storm conditions and icy roads.  They even closed the highway yesterday.  They carefully and slowly made their way home and arrived just at the recital time.  Katy was thrilled that they could be here.  The poor child has been working really hard on her recital and everyone is usually so busy to play with her, so she really really appreciates having Nana around to play with!

A little recital music

Lexi and Paisley made music too.

A magical tale of sharp-eyed friends

 A magical tale of sharp-eyed friends [1]

Once upon a time, there was a little honeybee fairy princess whose name was Rose [3].  She lived in an enchanted land of milk and honey with her Mama, the Queen of the Cuckoo birds [4], and her fast-walking, wise-cracking, cheerful Dada [18].

One fine Christmas morning [17], when the snow was already melting and Spring was on its way [15], the Honeybee Princess Rose decided to visit her playmates [12], Mary [8] and Musette [19].  Mary and Musette lived across the bridge [7] in France [6].

The three girls loved to play on the swings and were swinging together back and forth and back and forth repeatedly [14] when their friend, Ali Baba came running up the hill stammering “to-to-to tell Aunt Rhody, to-to-to tell Aunty Rhody” [9].

“Are you okay Ali Baba?  What do you want to tell Aunt Rhody?” asked Musette curiously.

“We need to tell her that I’ve found a secret map for a fabulous treasure of emeralds, rubies and diamonds hidden underneath a mysterious castle made of magical singing sand in the Land of Arabia [13].  The map is very very old and the treasure was buried long long ago [11], but I think I know how to find the magic singing sandcastle.  Can you help me decipher the clues and come with me to find the treasure?” asked Ali Baba.

The girls quickly got permission from Aunt Rhody, packed some sandwiches, and the four children quietly and stealthily walked down to the harbour to find a boat [1].  They wanted their quest to be secret so they had to row silently and lightly across the sea to Arabia [5].

By the time they arrived, it was night-time.  The map was written in magic ink that would only appear if the map-reader sang a beautiful song about miso soup and ice dance lifts during a full moon [10].

Moving with purpose but not too quickly for fear of alerting others to the location of the treasure [16], the friends followed the map to a beautiful shimmering castle made of pink sand.  They dug and dug under the castle until they found a huge treasure chest filled with emerald, ruby and diamond tiaras, necklaces, rings, bracelets and anklets.

Exhausted but elated, the friends cheered and celebrated by dancing a Highland jig  [2:1].
THE END!
 Brava Katy!

Dramatic entrance

Katy swept downstairs for her performance.  Her skirt is still so long that she needs to kick out her skirt to get down the stairs safely...
She created a little welcome sign for her guests today.

And was so excited to welcome Paisley and Lexi to her recital.

Twirling pianist

It's 9.30am and Katy is all dressed for her piano recital at 1pm.  Super excited.

Snow Day!

OK, same old same old, but we got our biggest snowfall of the season today, and after this season, that is saying something!  They reported 10 inches but we think we got over a foot in our little corner of Victoria.
Our deck and front lawn were covered in a pillowy doona of fluffly looking pure white snow that glistened and sparkled like Liberace.
We woke to a two hour delayed start for school and by 9am, school was cancelled.  It was a gloriously beautiful clear winter day and not too cold at all, but the huge snowfall had paralysed the roads and school transport was not working.
Dada had fun clearing the driveway with the hugest plume of snow from his state of the art snow blower.
Katy tried to help but the shovel was bigger than her!
And Mama really enjoyed her first experience of shovelling snow.  You can teach an old dog new tricks apparently!  What a great workout!  (Of course I can say this because I am fortunate to have a husband who usually always does it, so it's not a chore for me, just fun exercise!)

Sledding was fun but hard work sloughing through the Katy-chest-high snow to get back up the hill.

We have a TV room!

With no TV yet - it's still upstairs because of logistical problems.  But we do have our old Hong Kong furniture set up downstairs with some new pieces to go along.  We haven't been sitting downstairs at all so this expands our space by a whole new room!
