Back in the saddle

On our third full day in Bend, we left the kids with Auntie Tiffany and headed up to explore the "adult" sides of Mt Bachelor.

Scotty was a social butterfly and seemed to know everybody, whether from Bend or its environs, or even as far afield as the Bay Area...He was also our mountain guide, having grown up skiing those runs.  He certainly found his ski legs very quickly after a 15 year break from skiing!

Although it was a bit bare in patches and quite icy in others, the amazing blue sky and relatively warm conditions more than made up for it.  We had a blast!

Unfortunately, Auntie Tiffany and Quinn were not so keen to get up on the mountain, but Tiff certainly kept the kids busy off the slopes too!  Katy was thrilled to learn how to "finger knit".  Ellie is knitting, both finger and needle, as part of her school program.  They encourage it to teach focus and perseverance, as well as fine and gross motor skills.  They also see it as part of their "learn to read" suite of skills.

Tiff took them out for fancy haircuts and a jumping gym.

Most of the time though, the kids ran around like...well, kids!  It was wonderful to see the whole band of them traipsing around and going berserk, from six year olds Ellie and Katy to four year old Quinn and two year old Chloe.  For the most part, they were left to their own devices until one or the other of them came to complain about sharing or an inadvertent elbow in a side.  As Tiff said, the kids have not had these kinds of really free range joyous playdates since they were in Hong Kong as playdates here in the US seem to take on a bit of a different tone.  Bear in mind, all of these kids have literally been playing together since birth, practically!  Katy and Ellie "met" at nine months old in swimming lessons and have played several times a week since then.  When Quinn and Chloe were born, they were basically thrown into the playpen and bath with Katy and Ellie!

When we got back from the slopes, the Dads took over and treated the kids to frozen yoghurt, so the Mummies could sneak out for our traditional prosecco during playdates get-together!  I really like Downtown Bend!  It's very pretty and mountain town feeling with lots of cute shops and restaurants.
