On the way back to the classroom, a few of the Mummies from K3B told me Katy was crying. I rushed up there but Qiu Laoshi would not let me in and said Katy was fine. When the parents were allowed back into the classroom, Rick and I were horrified to find Katy sobbing hysterically. She was really upset. She told us she had fallen over and hurt herself. She continued crying throughout all of the class and group photos!
I had promised to wait outside, but some of the other local Mums (and one Dad) invited me to join them for tea while we waited for pick up time. I was really happy that I had the chance to get to know them all better. We've set up a What's App K3B parents group and we'll keep in touch by Facebook. Many of them are very curious about how we'll go in Minnesota and especially at our full immersion Mandarin school. I'm also really glad we will be able to keep in touch with the local Chinese learning system here in HK. They are a really great group of parents and we'll miss them when we go.
By the time we went back for pick up, Katy was fine though very happy to see me.
It was quite a while later in the afternoon, on the way home after a lovely time together, that Katy told me that she was crying because she couldn't see Mama and Dada after the performance. The same thing had happened last year at one of the performances. Katy saw us in the audience and knew we were there, but in the chaos of all the kids filing back to the classroom, she lost sight of us, and she got very sad and upset. I'm not sure if she felt abandoned or was upset because she thought we had left without saying goodbye. She's very sentimental. We completely forgot about her sensitivity and we should have remembered and made sure that she knew we would meet her back in the classroom! Ironically, we lost contact because we were waiting to get back into the school hall after registering for P1.
Poor Katy!
