On the ferry yesterday, Katy suddenly announced to me:
"Mama, did you know that Lucille's parents are stiff!?"
Mama, distracted did not reply.
Katy: "Mama Mama Lucille's parents are stiff!!"
Mama: "Who's Lucille?"
Katy: "She's a girl in my class."
Mama: "What do you mean her parents are stiff?"
Katy: "Stiff Stiff you know, it means they can't hear!"
Mama: "Oh, you mean deaf! Oh so they use sign language?"
Katy: "Yes."
Mama: "Just like Pia Pie (Katy's friend who is a child with Down syndrome). Pia knows how to use sign language."
Katy: "How come Pia knows sign language? Can she teach me?"
Mama: "Because Pia is very special. She learns sign language faster than learning to speak English."
...
...
...
Mama concentrates on getting off the ferry and getting a taxi, finds Katy in the taxi line with Dada all sad and upset and teary.
Katy: "Pia's special and I'm not special. Pia knows sign language and I don't."
Ahhh parenting moments at 8am in the morning. Don't you love them.
