Suzuki Piano Recital

Katy has worked really hard preparing for her second piano recital.  She's really improved a lot with her piano this year, and more importantly, she's made great strides with the discipline of practicing every day rain or shine, whether you feel like it or not, and with the discipline of doing drills rather than just playing the bits you like to play.  We're really proud of her and she's rightly proud of her piano skills.

For her piano concert this time, her teacher Miss Rebekah specified "concert best".  She knew that Katy has a "wedding dress" that she loves to dress up in, and to her credit, Miss Rebekah encouraged Katy to wear the wedding dress no matter what.

Each performer was trained to introduce herself and introduce the piece to be performed.

Miss Rebekah also encouraged to perform her own "composition" "Beauty and the Fox", which had its premiere at Great Edna's place "Valley View" in Long Prairie, Minnesota, at Christmastime 2011.  It even appeared in the programme.

But unfortunately, on the actual concert day, Katy decided she didn't want to play Beauty and the Fox.

She performed her concert piece, Little Playmates by F X Chwatal, beautifully and very musically.  She especially did a great job with the dynamics.  To learn Little Playmates, Katy and Mama made up a story about Katy and Cousin Sam playing tee ball (as this piece was Katy's first introduction to the ti chord), and Miss Alice joining in from Utah, where there is an echo, with Miss Rebekah joining in from Hong Kong too (witha nother echo!).  It really helped Katy remember the notes and also gave her a good framework for playing the piece musically to tell a story rather than just thumping out the notes.
It has not gone without notice at Suzuki School that Katy and Olivia are great friends, and kind of joined at the hip during group class.  So they were asked to play a duet together, which they loved!

They played Mary Had A Little Lamb.

At the end of the concert, Miss Rebekah inspired the kids with "Fireworks" by Debussy.
Katy really enjoys performing.  She always does a fantastic job of smiling and conveying to the audience what a great time she is having.

And of course, she got a huge huge bunch of flowers from Mama and Dada, and also from Uncle Bert, Auntie Pinky and Gabriel (held by Olivia).
Gabriel and family have attended both of Katy's piano concerts so far.  They are really enthusiastic supporters of Katy's activities.
Katy gave a beautiful bunch of purple irises (Miss Rebekah's favourite colour) and yellow jonquils to Miss Rebekah.

Katy and Olivia also thanked Miss Jennifer (the Principal of the Suzuki School) and Miss Lan for all their hard work preparing for the concert.  The Suzuki School does a really superb job of putting together these concerts to allow the students to showcase their work and get a taste of what it really means to be a Pianist.
