The Easter Jar

Katy is supposedly giving up candy for Lent...she's doing her best! She really has cut down a lot.

The biggest excitement/incentive for her is the creation of an "Easter Jar", which she has decorated herself. When offered candy, she is supposed to say "no thank you" and put it in her Easter Jar so she can have it at Easter. She's doing pretty well so far, if the crammed-full Easter jar is anything to go by...

Of course, being 3, Katy does forget sometimes that she is not supposed to have candy and it is supposed to go into the Easter Jar.

I'm pretty impressed that she is willing to forgo any candy at all and that she is happy not to raid the Easter Jar. Katy is not known for her strength in delayed gratification.

Fashion Taxi

A few weeks ago, Katy came downstairs wearing one of her outfits that she first wore to Jonah's 2nd birthday party. It still fits! Katy flounced down the stairs and said "Tia says 'Taxi' but I said 'fashion'!" in a very indignant voice.

Tia sometimes forgets and still says "sexy sexy", which is quite acceptable in Filipine culture to say to little girls - it means a sassy, pretty outfit. But Dada has asked Tia and Naan not to say this, and they are supposed to say "pretty", "beautiful" or "fashion" instead. Katy still has never quite gotten the "s-e-x-y" part and thinks that Tia and Naan are saying "taxi" rather than "sexy"!

What Katy Says

Where is the time going? March Madness in our house has just abated - Arts Festival and Literary Festival and Furniture Fairs all seem to take place in March!! Dada managed to miss the two events he was supposed to attend - NYC Ballet and the Opera Tristan.

Meanwhile we have not been keeping up with the blog. The irony is of course that the busier our household is, the less we are likely to blog and vice versa.

I've spent the month thinking I've got to get some of the things Katy is saying into the blog. Of course I've forgotten all of the them now.

Yesterday afternoon, Uncle Bert and Auntie Pinky came to visit with Gabriel. It was a lovely family lunch. Gabriel has only been to our place a couple of times - and this time, Uncle Bert, Auntie Pinky and Katy decided to introduce Gabriel to Katy's tree tent.
After lunch, Katy and I took them to the bus stop for Tung Chung. On the way back, we decided to check out the beginning of the trail that goes up the hill behind our house. The very steep trail. Well, Katy was enjoying it so much and surprised me about how easily she was doing it. She just loved exploring and climbing up the trail. So somehow we decided to go all the way up the trail, Mama in flip flops.

Katy made it all the way!

We talked about hiking safety, including keeping your eyes open. "Yes Mama, you have to keep your eyes open," said Katy, then looked around at me very wisely and solemnly said, "but you still have to blink sometimes."

Katy only started to get a bit tired when we started coming back down the hill. We had to borrow a mobile phone to call Dada to rescue us, and Mama piggy-backed Katy part of the way down the hill, and we flagged a contractor's van to take us part of the way. Boy were we glad to see Dada with the stroller! Katy rode in the stroller all the way home on the road. She was a real trooper though and now we can look forward to some lovely hikes together. It was beautiful weather for a hike.

Here is Katy after our hike, showing off her very fashionable hiking clothes!

Mrs Lai's

We took Katy for her first dinner at our very good family friends' restaurant "Malaya" in Bonham Road near HKU. Bert wanted to show Gabriel to Mr and Mrs Lai, and Mrs Lai needed some career management advice for their daughter Fannie.
Mrs Lai always makes this amazing Shanghai pork especially for Rick as she knows it is a firm favourite of his (and ours of course, but she says she makes it for Rick)!
You can really see the family resemblance between Katy and Uncle Bert in this photo.
And even more so in this one.
Katy really goofed around with Mrs Lai and Mrs Lai's sister, who of course all doted on her to no end.

Katy really really really adores Uncle Bert, Gabriel and Auntie Pinky.
It was also another opportunity to spend more time with Auntie Pinky's Mother - which is a great way to practice Cantonese as Pinky's Mum is speaking Cantonese to Gabriel.
Mr and Mrs Lai really enjoyed the new baby.
