It worked!!??????

OK, test drive number 2. Katy entertaining us at home while waiting for the hire car to take her to Baby Ballet. March 2009. A Thursday.

Test sillies

OK, inspired by Heather and responding to the hopes of grandmothers, this is our first attempt to get video onto the blog. I should say my first attempt - the scary bit was doing it without my conquering IT hero to guide me. We'll see...if this works then hopefully more will follow!

leapfrog

Katy is just growing up so quickly! She has been a bit grumpy and wilful lately - today we noticed her two year molar coming out on the top left side, which explains a lot.

It's been a real battle of wills lately, culminating in a prolonged episode this morning where she very stubbornly refused to put away a toy, to the point of refusing bribes of flower biscuits (bright pink with icing on top too!) and throwing the toy away when it was put into her hand and the container held out in front of her. The whole matter was only resolved when Dada took her into her room for a little chat and then they came out, and with a lot of encouragement and "help", Katy finally placed the last few pieces of the toy back in their container to much fanfare and cheering from the whole household. It was all still touch and go though - I saw quite a glint in her eye even as she placed the last piece in. She forgot all about the bribe. But this is all amazing because she has been until now a wonderfully cooperative child. Wilful and stubborn about sleep, but always cooperative and eager to please about everything else. I guess we are heading into the terrible twos.

There's so much going on though - I'm sure it is frustrating for Katy to not have all the words she wants to communicate and also to be constantly told what to do and what not to do.

She now likes counting from 4 to 9. She knows 1, 2, 3 so she doesn't bother with that, but we hear her often saying 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9...and maybe 10. Of course, she refuses when we get excited and ask her to do it for us. I don't think she knows the numerical concept, just the number order. And she now says ABCD, not just ABC. She gets excited when she sees alphabet toys around and says "Mama Mama ABCD ABCD".

Then tonight, out of the blue for Mama, Katy picked up her "Peek A" book and said "boo" for the ghost page and "choo choo" for the train page.We had never heard that before. Dad used to read this book a lot to her, but that was a long time ago.

She also enjoyed Snow White on Friday night and Goodnight Moon this evening. She loved saying Goodnight Moon.

Sorry, not wanting to boast about our child at all (really!), but I am using this forum as a journaling record to remind me of Katy's development and "latest tricks". Feel free to skip these bits and look at the picture postings only.

Yesterday, we had a big day. Katy got to bed only at 8.15pm. She was very tired and practically passed out, sleeping through until 6.15am. She had a good nap today of almost one and a half hours, but she had a bad nap yesterday, barely 30 minutes after Dada rocked her to sleep, and then was grumpy and tired at Ally Park's first birthday at The China Club. It was wonderful to meet Ally for the first time. They played a wonderful traditional Korean first birthday game where they place several objects in front of the child and see which one he or she picks, which indicates what the child will become. For example, money for finance, a book for academics, a pen for creativity, string for longevity, and a golf ball for a golfer. Ally picked the golf ball. Katy enjoyed her birthday cupcake, but the lunch with adults was a bit boring for her.

Then we went to Repulse Bay to see our friends Joyce and Ken and their new baby girl Lorena, who is almost 3 months old. Katy loved baby Lorena and was very concerned if she was not nearby. She was so gentle and loving with the baby. Katy also loved our friends' house - it was a whole new world to explore. She did very well with a long day without any real playtime.

We tried really hard to get her back on her dinner and bedtime routine this evening. She did really well. She wanted Mama to give her dinner and put her to bed and we had a lovely leisurely time after she had her bath with Dada. She was so funny. She initially refused to put her nappy on of course but then started rubbing her eyes and was persuaded to get dressed without much fuss at all compared to recent evenings. She wanted to sit in the rocking chair herself while reading Peek A, and then the lights were turned off and her Tommy Turtle star toy was put on and Mama sang to her while rocking her in the chair. After refusing constantly, she finally agreed to sit on Mama's lap in the rocker, then after one hymn (she even allowed Mama to sing Prayer of St Francis again), she asked for her book (I bring book bed) and went into the crib without a fuss, just a little cry out for her angel and bunny. What a joy Katy is. We are truly blessed to have her as our daughter.

My first manicure

Nana will be envious! Katy will have so much fun joining in Nana and Ella's beautyshop games this Summer. Nana filed Katy's nails over Christmas and Katy was fascinated. Tia Ella clips her nails now. And Katy has long been fascinated by toenail polish. She has watched Poh Poh having pedicures at Sense of Touch, but was not keen to try it herself while she was there. Well, today we dropped in to see Auntie Yvonne and Uncle Rich, our neighbours down the block, and Auntie Yvonne gave Katy her first manicure with nail polish! She loved it! She was totally quiet and fascinated and concentrating trying to work it all out. It is amazing to see how much she absorbs. After not seeming to take much notice at the time, when she saw Julie afterwards, she told Kunaan about her manicure and showed her how she blew on her nails to dry them!

First, Auntie Yvonne used an orange stick to push back Katy's cuticles.

Then she got out the file to tidy her nails. Actually Katy found the clippers and asked Auntie Yvonne to clip her nails too! ("This one").
It was all a bit ticklish!
Then the fun part - Katy got to pick her own colour.
She chose a very ladylike and demure neutral pearl shade.
But was persuaded to do one nail in a bright orange to jazz things up a bit!
Uncle Rich came over to inspect the project.
Then of course Katy wanted to try doing it herself ("I do it").

And of course she wanted to do Mama's nails. Mama is flavour of the month at the moment. She really wants Mama to be there with her to do everything with her, even just to sit nearby to watch. I hope she always feels this way!

On our way out, Katy and Uncle Rich had a tickle fest. Katy loved tickling Uncle Rich and getting such a funny reaction!

Pretzels, cashews and her own water mug completed a lovely afternoon.

We're so blessed to have such wonderful neighbours who love Katy so much!

You light up my senses...

like a walk in the forest...
Katy loves going "off piste" now and wandering through the pine grove next to our home. She is fascinated with the pine cones, tree stumps and rocks.

Today, she was really excited that both Mama and Dada took her out for a little walk. Of course, as soon as we whipped out the camera, she wanted to take charge. Here is one of her first (successful) portraits of Dada. Not bad for under 2.

Dada took Katy for a special little walk through the path under the steep hill below our place. She had never been here before. She loves the steep bits and really really really wants to go down there. She tries but realises it is too steep for her and then asks us to carry her down! We have been trying to tell her a firm no.

Another sleep update

We've gotten a bit off routine lately what with Mama hiding out during the old prime nana times of early morning, naptime and bedtime. Dada has been a little more indulgent. Katy has gotten a little stroppy as a result - sometimes getting quite ornery and bullying Tia and Kunaan! She's only sleeping around 11 hours at night (7pm to 6am) and has missed her nap twice in the last week, and only sleeps an hour at most on good days. Very worrying.

But Mama is back in town and we mean business. Next week will be back to business with the routines. We were so hopeful we were going to stamp out those early wakenings and wishy washy naps...

Little Poser

Katy and Tia Mila were having fun the other day on the rocking horse and whale so we decided to get a quick snapshot. As soon as Katy saw the camera, she of course got off her horse and we thought she would demand the camera as she normally does.
But instead, what happened was that she started posing and primping like a professional model. We have NO IDEA where she got this from or even how she would know to pose like that in front of a camera...

Well, wherever she got it from, unfortunately for Katy, she will not be practising it in any studio soon. Dada is adamantly against any suggestion of Katy doing child modelling. Lots of the kids and babies in DB seem to do it...
Katy's favourite rhyme right now is "Tall as a Tree". Here she is tall as a tree. I am still working on getting pictures of her being wide as a house, thin as a pin and small as a mouse. Dada likes to make her do it super fast. Katy likes that a lot too!

Happy Birthday Tia Mila!

It was Tia's birthday on Wednesday the 4th of March, and we all went out for lunch. Katy loved it of course. Especially the chocolate birthday cake...

Run around Katy

Katy loves to run. And do little jigs on the spot when she is excited. Very cute. Here's her first pair of running shoes. A sweet little stylish pair of white brown and pink pumas. As soon as she tried them on, she started running around and around the store. We couldn't catch her!
I had a wonderful afternoon with Katy in Tung Chung the afternoon we bought these shoes. We walked and walked all over the mall. She was exhausted! And she had lots of treats - croissant at Delifrance, ice cream and apple juice at Pacific Coffee, and fries from MacDonald's! Can you guess why? This was our first day of weaning two weeks ago and Mama was feeling very very indulgent and anxious. Katy did really well.

In fact, she has done really well. I think we're pretty much done. We hope. It's taken two weeks. Recently, we explained to her that we are trying to have a baby so Katy must stop the nana and this is the sacrifice she has to make for a little baby. Now, when she seems like she wants nana, she looks at me and pats me on the chest and says "baby? baby?" and is satisfied with that. She is so sweet and would dearly love a little brother or sister. She takes her little babies everywhere and takes care of them so well.

The latest obsessions of Little Fountainhead

Fisherman's Friends lozenges. She keeps trying to suck them because Mama and Dada eat them so they must be yummy. But they are not so they inevitably get spit out again. We figure it's a good way to teach her that sometimes it pays to listen to Mama and Dada when we say something is yucky and not yummy at all. But Katy seems to have a naturally suspicious mind and insists on continuing to try them out just in case we were trying to trick her with yucky tasting ones but they are really yummy most of the time...
